I was concerned that this shade would look too orange in my dirty blonde hair, but I'm actually really happy with how it warmed up my tone and added some color (and youth!) back to my face. It acts as the conditioning step during a normal wash, only you let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes, depending on how dramatic you want the results to be.I may have over rinsed it. It seemed like a long time before my hair stopped dropping a ton of pigment during the rinse. My hair is soft and rather shiny too. Nothing left on my white pillow case over night.
This is an interesting product. Make sure to read the instructions before you use it. Get your hair towel dry like you would when coloring your hair. Then apply this onto your hair evenly, leave it on for like 10 to 15 minutes and rinse out. Then follow up with a conditioner. This toner comes in a squeeze tube that works. It has a very pleasant scent which is surprising for a product of this type that tends to not smell very good. It can stain your hands so work quickly and wash your hands with soap well or wear gloves. It does rinse out with ease from your hair so I had no issues there which is good. Sadly I think my hair is just a bit too dark to see any effects from this product so I can't attest on if that works.
Unless you spend a fortune for a top colorist in a high end salon, it's very difficult to get subtle highlights that aren't more than just an old school frosting (aka bleaching) job. My highlights always come out too light and ashy, not the best match for my fair but warm skin tone. In the past, when I felt my hair looked over processed, I'd tone it down with a temporary hair color, because they're great for "staining" the bleached hair without turning virgin hair brassy (the way the caustic agents in permanent hair colors invariably do). Unfortunately, temporary hair colors like Natural Instincts are becoming increasingly difficult to find. When I found this toning conditioner, I kind of figure it was too good to be true. I've used various shampoos and conditioners that purport to tone down the effects of permanent hair coloring and, not only do they make a mess of the tub, but they really don't do very much. But folks, this stuff works.I ordered this in the shade Toffee, in hopes of toning down my over processed highlights. After shampooing and conditioning, I towel-dried my hair, worked about two large blobs of this through my damp chin-length hair and left it for 20 minutes before rinsing. The formerly overly blonde frosted strands of hair are now a gorgeous warm caramel color that suits my Italian skin coloring so much better.Apparently, this can be used in place of conditioner to maintain your ideal shade, which I will continue to do. Plus, I intend to order another five tubes, just in case they decide to discontinue it (as they seem to do with all of my "ride-or-die" beauty products).
I ordered this because, like everyone else, I'm not spending as much time as I wish in the salon these days and my hair is showing it. My highlights had grown out too much but weren't really looking like a balayage so I was hoping this might tone it all down and make it look healthier and more natural. This did a great job of toning down the highlights. If anything, it might have toned them down too much, but thats ok because I think they were pretty porous and just drank this up. It's a little more "yellow" than I might have chosen, but I think highlights tend to tone either yellow or red and this looks really natural with my base color. I'd recommend it to others with the one warning that it might go on darker than expected on the highlights so maybe try it on one area first and make sure its what you want but otherwise, I'm really happy with it.
I received this tone conditioner in toffee. This gives a very nice golden copper Brown while leaving the hair hydrated. I was very happy with this conditioner and the amount of color that it deposited.
